Belarus, Poland eager to build heat power plant in Grodno oblast

Belarus and intend to implement a project for building a heat power plant in Zelva, the Grodno oblast, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Poland to Belarus Henryk Litwin told a press conference on 14 July.

It will be a major Belarusian-Polish economic project for building a power plant that will use Polish coal, noted the diplomat.

Henryk Litwin pointed out the falling trade between the two countries and attributed it to the world economic crisis. In his words, so far this year Belarusexport to has shrunk by about 40% while the import from has declined by 13-15%. “If we leave prices aside, the number of sold goods has increased,” he added. The Ambassador remarked that economic entities in the two countries remain active. “Their activity is rising but in present conditions it is difficult to achieve the desired effect”.

The head of the Polish diplomatic mission underscored that Polish businessmen promptly respond to changing market conditions and are eager to supply the products that are in demand in Belarus . “This is why Polish export has not been largely affected by the crisis,” he believes.

The Ambassador underscored the importance of the project designed to supply Belarusian oil products to Poland . He also said that major Polish investors are intent on carrying out several projects in Belarus . In particular, Polish investors are interested in banking, insurance and telecommunications.

“We also would like Belarusian economic entities to appear on the Polish stock exchange. The rest of our neighbours did it in their time. Carefully but they did it,” noted the head of the Polish diplomatic mission.

Assistant Secretary of the Embassy of Poland in Belarus Kacper Wanczyk said that a project for sharing Polish experience of privatization and investment attraction is in the works. The project has been designed by the Polish Agency for Information and Foreign Investments and the State Property Committee of Belarus. The Agency is accountable to the Economy Ministry. “I hope it will contribute to boosting our cooperation in the area of economy,” said the diplomat.
