Tajikistan to adopt Belarus’ free economic zones practices

Tajikistan is interested in developing the mutually beneficial cooperation with Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Tajikistan of Belarus Kozidavlat Koimdodov stated as he met with the leadership of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee.

“Tajikistan is on the way of forming and stabilizing the economic and political life. It carries out important projects to provide energy security. At the same time, there are many tasks to be solved including the revival of the national seed farming and cattle breeding. These are the branches which were preserved and improved in Belarus,” Kozidavlat Koimdodov noted. Tajikistan intends to set up free economic zones. So, it is interested in Belarus’ free economic zones practices, the Tajik Ambassador said. The free economic zones have been successfully operating in Belarus for more than ten years, the diplomat added.

According to the Ambassador, Tajikistan is ready to supply cotton, aluminum, fruits and vegetables to Belarus. Kozidavlat Koimdodov proposed not to use middlemen, develop closer relations between regions that will reflect on the price level positively.

In turn, Deputy Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Nikolai Krivetsky noted that at present the Brest Oblast trades with more than 100 countries. At the same time, the trade between the Brest Oblast and Tajikistan is not significant so far. In 2009 the mutual trade made up $7.5 million. The Brest Oblast exports wooden materials to Tajikistan and imports cotton.

Nikolai Krivetsky expressed hope that the visit of the Tajik Ambassador to the Brest Oblast will give an impetus to the further development of the mutually beneficial cooperation between Tajikistan and Belarus.
