The university has more than 8,000 students, postgraduate students, clinical residents Belarusian State Medical University is a leading institution of higher medical education in the Republic of Belarus, having well-deserved international prestige and recognition. The beginning of its history dates back to 1921, when there was announced about the opening of Belarusian State University, which at that time also included the Faculty of Medicine. Today, the educational process of the university is organized at 9 faculties: Faculty of General Medicine; Faculty of Dentistry; Pediatrics Faculty; Faculty of Preventive Medicine; Pharmacy Faculty; Medical Faculty for International Students; Faculty of Career Guidance and pre-University Training, Faculty of Military Medicine, Faculty of Continuing Education for Healthcare Professionals and 3 institutes: Military Medicine Institute and Institute of Advanced Training and Retraining of Healthcare Professionals, Scientific and Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine. The university has more than 8,000 students, postgraduate students, clinical residents, including more than 3,000 foreign citizens from more than 60 countries, who receive education in the Russian and English languages. Since 1970, BSMU has trained more than 4,000 foreign specialists from about 100 countries. For many of them, studying at university became the key to a successful career. Children of our graduates quite often study at the university, forming medical dynasties of one Alma Mater. Education at the university is practice-oriented and is carried out at 96 departments (31 ones are of theoretical profile, 65 ones - clinical). On average, 80% of classroom activities are practical and laboratory ones. From the first year of study, students learn first aid techniques, patient care, and the techniques for performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Training sessions on clinical and specialized disciplines are organized at more than 100 healthcare institutions and scientific and practical centers in Minsk. Practical skills are improved in operating rooms, dressing rooms, manipulation rooms, maternity wards, and at the patient’s bedside. To develop practical skills and abilities, there has been created and has been functioning a simulation and certification center, where simulation educational technologies are successfully implemented with the imitation of various clinical cases in the following areas: “therapy”, "obstetrics and gynecology", "anesthesiology and resuscitation", "pediatrics", "general medical practice", "neonatology", "surgery", "medical care and manipulation techniques", "urology", "otolaryngology", "fundamentals of medical care", "first aid". In their 6th year, students from the medical, pediatric, and preventive medicine faculties undergo sub-internship, which is a stage of in-depth specialist training in a specific field: "Therapy", "General Medical Practice", "Anesthesiology and Resuscitation", "Surgery", "Obstetrics and Gynecology", "Pediatrics", "Pediatric Surgery", "Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Neonatology", "Hygiene and Epidemiology", "Laboratory Research", "Clinical (Hospital) Epidemiology". Modern information technologies and elements of distance learning are actively used in the educational process: alectronic educational and methodological complexes in the Moodle system in Russian and English; an electronic journal of students' academic performance; an electronic dean's office; electronic student ID card; a repository containing over 30,000 full-text documents on all subject areas; interactive whiteboards, anatomical table; interactive voting systems in classrooms; intranet sites for university staff and students, and a student personal account. There is an access to medical websites through the Internet; there has been created a video archive of unique and high-tech surgeries to study surgical interventions and new diagnostic techniques; there have been implemented projects to broadcast surgical procedures from operating rooms to classrooms in surgical departments. More than a thousand of students participate in the research work in the majority of the university's departments. It has become a good tradition of the student scientific society to hold annual conferences with further publication of the research results of young scientists, who have been leaders of the Republican Competition of student research papers for three years. The university's international activities are characterized by dynamic development, covering new regions and forms of cooperation. The university's partners include more than 170 foreign institutions of higher medical education from more than 30 countries. The University cooperates and exchanges information on current issues of higher medical education with the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), The International Association of Universities (IAU), the Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating (IAAR); on current health issues - with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the WHO Country Office for Europe (WHO Country Office, Belarus); in the scientific, educational and medical fields - with the Universal Science and Education Network (USERN) and other international organizations.
